How to make a PDF darker for printing

Step 1: darken the file

1. Open DarkenMyPDF and choose your PDF. Nothing is uploaded — the work happens inside the browser tab.
2. Leave the mode on Auto Print Enhance for the first attempt. It measures each page and applies only as much correction as that page needs.
3. Wait for the before/after preview. Drag the slider across and look at the smallest text on the page, not the headings.
4. If it still looks light, switch to Print Ready. If it looks heavy and small text has filled in, drop Text Darkness by 15 or 20 under Advanced settings.
5. Download the enhanced file. Your original is untouched and still on disk.

Step 2: print one page, not the whole document

A preview on a backlit screen is not a print. Print a single representative page — ideally one with small type, a table and any signature or stamp — and look at it under normal room light.

Three things to check: is the body text solid rather than grey; have the thinnest characters (commas, the crossbar of an "e", decimal points) survived; and is any stamp or signature still visible.

Step 3: stop the printer undoing it

If the enhanced page still prints faint, the printer is now the limiting factor. These settings are worth a minute of your time.

• Turn off Toner Save, Economy or Draft mode — these exist to lighten output deliberately.
• Set quality to Normal or Best rather than Fast.
• On laser printers, raise the Density or Darkness setting by one step.
• Print greyscale documents through the greyscale path rather than the colour one.
• If the page is faint in bands rather than uniformly, that is hardware — a low cartridge or a worn drum — and no file change will help.

Choosing between the modes

Auto Print Enhance is right nearly always: it reads the page and adapts. The named modes exist for when you already know what is wrong.

Print Ready leans harder on all three levers because it assumes paper is the destination. Darken Text is the conservative choice for very faint originals, because it leaves the background mostly alone rather than risking erasing faint strokes. Clean Scan is for grey, speckled photocopies. Black & White is for line art and forms where you want the smallest possible file and no greys at all.

A note on when not to darken

If a document contains photographs, a scanned photo ID, or charts with deliberate shading, aggressive darkening flattens exactly the mid-tones that carry the information. Stay on Auto, and if the result looks blocky, reduce Contrast before anything else.
